Chewing gum reduced anxiety, heightened awareness and bettered ability to perform several tasks at one.
The study results showed people chewing gum were much more relaxed and successful at their activities. It is said that, it's possible that chewing gum may be associated with positive, relaxing social behavior.
The study results also indicated chewing gum may help prevent bad reactions to stressful situations.
Dietitian and Food and Nutrition Australia director said research had previously shown chewing gum increases the number of kilojoules burnt and can reduce cravings for sweets.
The research was funded by chewing-gum company Wrigley.

So what you think friends? I love listening mellow music, classical and any with soft melody. So without my knowing, I'm almost every day keeping my heart healthy.

Homepage

Marrow transplants cure AIDS

An American man with AIDS appears to have been cured 20 months after receiving a targeted bone marrow transplant normally used to fight leukemia.
While his doctors and AIDS researchers caution the case might be no more than a fluke, others say it may inspire a greater interest in gene therapy to fight the disease that claims two million lives a year.
The virus has infected 33 million people worldwide.
The American man who is living in Berlin, had been living with AIDS virus for more than a decade. But 20 months after undergoing a transplant of genetically selected bone marrow, he no longer showed signs of the virus. He had stopped taking conventional AIDS medication. "We waited every day for a bad reading," the doctor of the American man said. But the bad reading did not come.
Researchers in Berlin's Charite Hospital and medical school say tests on his bone marrow, blood and other organ tissues showed no sign of AIDS.
What do you think? Maybe those tests were probably not extensive enough right? But if it's really because of the marrow transplant, should we say that AIDS carrier has now more hope to get rid of the virus? Hopefully. According to a doctor, a lot of scrutiny from a lot of different biological samples would be required to say that the AIDS virus is not present.
Marrow transplants have been used before to treat AIDS and HIV.

Homepage

Busting breast cancer myths

Tall tales about what causes breast cancer can do more harm than good.

MYTH ONE

Having a family history of breast cancer means you will get the disease
Most women who get breast cancer don't have a family history of the disease, Boyages says. "Therefore, all women should think about their breast health," he says. "For women aged 50-69, that means going for regular mammograms. Call 132 050 for information about the free breast-screening program."

MYTH TWO

Breast cancer is a young woman's disease
With the public face of breast cancer featuring the young faces of Belinda Emmett, Jane McGrath, Kylie Minogue and Christina Applegate, you could be forgiven for thinking it's a young woman's disease. It's not.

"The data is quite strong," Henderson says. "In Australia we are not seeing an increase in young women [under 50] with breast cancer. The [most common] age is the late 50s and 60s."

MYTH THREE

Antiperspirants and underwire bras cause breast cancer
"These are urban myths that have been debunked many times," Henderson says. Boyages says: "Breast cancer has been around since the ancient Egyptians and I don't think they had underwire bras."

MYTH FOUR

Freezing water in plastic, or microwave cooking with plastics releases cancer-causing toxins
One email doing the rounds warns of the dangers of the above and is attributed to the John Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Baltimore. John Hopkins has labelled the email a hoax.

"Freezing water does not cause the release of chemicals from plastic bottles," Boyages says. "And there are clear recommendations to only use microwave-safe containers. "

MYTH FIVE

Lumpy breasts increase your risk
Boyages says: "A lot of women get lumpier breasts before their period or may have cysts, which are common in the breast. Nine out of 10 lumps are not cancer. But if you have a lump that doesn't go away, have a triple test."

MYTH SIX

Small breasts reduce your risk
Breast size has nothing to do with the risk of breast cancer but Henderson says obese women, specifically women who are post-menopausal, have an increased risk.

MYTH SEVEN

Implants increase your risk of breast cancer
Silicon breast implants are not linked to breast cancer risk. The National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre reports that a large study on the long-term effects of implants followed women for more than 10 years and showed no increased risk.

Boyages says: "In some ways it's easier to find breast cancer, because the implant pushes the breast tissue forward."

MYTH EIGHT

Breast pain indicates breast cancer
Most breast cancers don't cause significant pain but a few do. "So you can't be complacent if a lump is painful," Boyages says. "In about 10 per cent of cases of breast cancer there is pain."

MYTH NINE

Nipple discharge indicates breast cancer
The majority of nipple discharge has nothing to do with cancer but Henderson says bloody discharges are a concern. "Even then, more often than not, it is not breast cancer," he says. Boyages says doctors will also be concerned by discharge that is coloured "like straw".

MYTH TEN

Mammograms cause breast cancer
Exposure to ionising radiation can cause cancer. However, given the limited number of mammograms a woman has in her lifetime and the standards of mammographic equipment in use in Australia, the increased radiation exposure from a mammogram is minimal, says the NBOCC.

"If you are 50 [and] having a mammogram every two years, the risk of radiation is far less than other risks we take every day," Boyages says.

However, having radiation for other cancers does increase your risk of breast cancer.

"If, for example, someone had Hodgkin's lymphoma as a teenager and had radiation treatment, they would be at much higher risk of breast cancer, so should start having mammograms 10 years after their initial treatment.

Homepage

Top 25 EC Droppers of the month

Babette's Definitely Maybe!
Babette's Personal blog about family, travel, health and women's issues.

BetterSpines

A Chiropractor's views on health and fitness;a diabetic with a dodgy heart; things that interest me.

Thailand Land of Smiles

All about the jewel of the orient, Thailand. We refer to the stimulants that can lead to asthma as "triggers".
Triggers are everywhere. Triggers cause inflammation or swelling in your airways and make your asthma worse. Reducing your exposure to things that trigger your asthma is a large part of taking control of your asthma.

Different people react to different asthma triggers and many people with asthma react to a variety of triggers. Asthma may develop from exposure to one trigger or from a number of triggers simultaneously (e.g. a student with a cold goes into a change room where deodorant has been sprayed). For some people it is difficult to determine what triggers their asthma like my own son. He has this asthma attacked recently and we don't what causes the triggers. It's been a long time that he's not having an attack. But before that, or a week before he got some skin allergies that we're not sure if that's what they called eczema or just a plain asthma allergy.

Common asthma triggers:
Colds and Flu: The most common trigger, particularly for children. When a student with asthma has a cold or the flu it is highly probable that they will develop asthma symptoms.

Exercise: A trigger for many people with asthma. This trigger should not be avoided, but exercise induced asthma can be managed by taking your blue reliever puffer 5-10 minutes before activity and warming up and warming down after exercise.

Smoke: Children of mother who smoke when pregnant and those who experience passive smoking in early childhood have a higher risk of developing asthma. As well as active and passive cigarette smoke, woodsmoke from open fires, burn-offs or bushfires can trigger asthma.

If you would like more information you can visit www.asthma.org.au.

Homepage

Eczema and Asthma

Recent research has highlighted the link between eczema and asthma. Children with eczema have twice the risk of having asthma later in life.

In the largest study of its kind, researchers tracked 8500 Tasmanians from Childhood to get the first concise picture of how allergic conditions develop. The findings, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, support the theory that eczema is often the first step in an allergic chain that leads to other related conditions such as hay fever and asthma. People who had childhood eczema were more likely to develop childhood asthma or new-onset asthma later in life, or to have asthma that persisted from childhood into middle age.

One in six children have asthma, that can not only affect their health but also their learning, as it is the leading cause of school absenteeism.

Homepage

The Worries of Relocating

The are a lot of worries and stress when it comes to packing everything and going. Implants and their attached crowns closely mimic the look and function of real teeth. They can make an attractive alternative to dentures and bridges.
Dental implant techniques can replace one or several missing teeth. In some cases, an entire set of artificial teeth can be carried on dental implants.
A dental implant is the metal "root" (implant) that is inserted into the jawbone. The artificial tooth (crown) is attached to the implants by use of an abutment. In some cases, instead of an artificial tooth, an implant can be fitted with special clips or attachments (similar to pressing studs) to hold a denture. he studs will minimize movement of the denture.

Dental implants:
* help to withstand greater bite pressures with dentures
* prevent bone loss in the jaw (this may reduce the risk of adjacent natural teeth becoming loose)
* prevent the formation of hollowed or collapsed cheeks that can occur after tooth extraction (missing teeth cause bone loss in the jaw)
* are usually surrounded by gum tissue like natural teeth
* may prevent gum recession
* unlike bridges, do not require the cutting and reshaping of neighboring healthy teeth
* are firmly secured in the jaws
* are usually more comfortable than dentures
* usually do not require separate routines or special cleaning products, as with dentures or bridges
* like natural teeth, are cleaned by dental floss and brushing with regular toothpaste.

A dental implant is designed to last for many years, but poor oral hygiene can shorten its lifespan. Good oral hygiene is crucial.
Like real teeth, artificial teeth that are not regularly brushed and flossed can develop deposits (plaque and calculus) that eventually lead to dental problems such as bleeding gums, loss of bone, infection and pain.
Properly maintained implants that are anchored by sufficient bone can last for many years, although repairs may be expected like any other dental appliance.
In order to achieve a good outcome, a patient's case may need to be managed by several practitioners. While this can affect the length of treatment and costs, it is done in the interests of the patient's well-being.

Homepage

Quick dental check-up

I had a quick dental check-up yesterday. Actually, I thought the dentist will start to do the root canal treatment, because with my first check-up, she told me that I have a root canal infection that needs to be treated with my next appointment. After a day with what the dentist did with my first check-up, I felt a terrible pain with my affected tooth. Just imagine, I need to wait a week just to book for another appointment because it's only every Wednesday that she's there at the clinic. I don't like the idea of going to another clinic and face another dentist. I want to stick to one that I already used to. So the pain started Thursday and it last until Monday. The pain only stop after taking pain-reliever every six hours. I'm not used to take medicine like anti-pain and etc., but that's the only choice I have to do just to get rid of the worst pain. I can't sleep because it bothers me a lot. With five days of pain, I lose weight which is too bad because I'm working on gaining weight. Tuesday, the pain slow down even without pain-reliever until yesterday. So the dentist check my tooth and I explain how I felt. The abscess that keeps coming back and the yucky pus which is always present.
You know what the dentist told me? I have to give up my tooth. It has a crack inside that let the bacteria gets in which is causing the pain. Root canal can do nothing. Tooth extraction is the solution. I felt bad. I don't want to loose my tooth. Are your teeth guys still complete. Is it still pair with the other side? Oh no. I hate the consequences if my tooth being pulled. All my teeth will start to move and the alignment will be broken. Do you know what it means? Maybe some of you don't know the reason why losing a tooth is not really good especially if it's a big one. It's a big deal for me. I don't want to lose even a single tooth. I'm always careful with my oral hygiene but why this is happening to me? Arrrg!
This coming Oct.22, I have another 1hour appointment with my dentist. She will pull it out.
Are you familiar with dental implants? A surgery that will replace a missing tooth with a false tooth. The procedure is so scary. I don't know if I'll take the risk. I'm so scared. That's an option anyway and I need $3000-4000 for that procedure. Can you imagine that? I was given an information about dental implants. I'll gonna post and share the information later on.
I'm still hoping that I can till keep my tooth. I'm feeling fine now. Yesterday was just a free check-up because she only look at it and told me what to do next. I was given an anti-biotic prescription in case the pain will come back. I didn't buy it because I'm feeling okay. No more pain, no more abscess and no more pus. I'm still hoping that I can go for a root canal treatment. I want to save my tooth. Oh dear...please.

Homepage

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a type of surgery on your tooth. It is needed when a dental carie or an old filling that is broken allows bacteria into the tooth. These bacteria may live quite happily in your teeth and eventually damage the tooth pulp and nerve.

As the bacteria continue to kill the pulp in the root of your tooth (in the root canal) you may develop a lump or "gum pimple" which is a build up of pus from the infection.

Root canal treatment removes the dead and damaged tissue in the tooth and fills it, much like a normal filling. Some people may require a crown, which is basically a cover to go over the top of the newly filled root canal.

You may be required to go back to the dentist more than once, so a temporary filling may be used until you can have a crown put on your tooth.
Source:www.emedical.com.au

Homepage

Root Canal Infection

A root canal infection can become serious and spread to other areas of the face and skull. It is not uncommon for teeth to die and get infected. Since the tooth is dead, blood can't enter the tooth and bring protective immune cells to kill the infection, so the problem grows. In most cases the infection spreads to the surrounding bone. This causes increases the pressure and the tooth is pushed up out of its socket. The tooth feels high when biting.

The body attacks the root canal infection surrounding the tooth and the area around the tooth becomes inflamed. The inflammation leads to tooth pain. Antibiotics alone do not cure the problem. The dead nerve inside the tooth must be removed and the canals cleaned, otherwise the remaining dead tissue can feed infection. This is why many patients go to the dentist for an emergency appointment, get antibiotic and in a week feel great. Because they feel well, they don't return. Three months later the problem returns and is much more serious and sometimes life threatening.

Sometimes the body and the root canal infection come to a stalemate and a dental abscess forms. This dental abscess can remain inside a patient's jaw bone for years and constantly feed live and dead bacteria into this patient's bloodstream. Keeping the dead tooth is not an option and taking herbs, vitamins, or even prescription antibiotics will not solve the problem. The correct treatment is to perform root canal therapy or a dental extraction.

The root canal infection must be treated with the correct antibiotics to kill the bacteria causing the dental infection. With the constant use of antibiotics over many years, super resistant bacteria have developed that can not be easily killed. This is especially why this problem should be treated soon and treated aggressively.
Source:www.atlantadentist.com

Homepage

My First dental Check-Up

Yesterday I had my first dental check-up here in Australia. I felt a slight pain with my tooth that has a temporary filling. My last dental appointment was November 2007 back in the Philippines. My temporary filling is really overdue. That supposed to be three weeks after being placed, but you know we became busy after then. I had an abscess on the gum that keeps on coming back. The dentist perform the x-ray and remove the temporary filling, clean it and change with a new temporary filling. The dentist told me that an abscess on the gum is caused by an infection of the root canal and if the root canal will not undergo treatment, the abscess will really keep on coming back unless I have to give up my tooth. As for now, it's under observation. If there's a good improvement with my next visit, then the root canal treatment will start. But, if it will get worst then bye bye tooth. I'm always careful with my teeth but no matter how we're careful, tooth will get old, tooth will decay. I also hate the teeth discoloration. You know, dental is too costly especially here in this country. We spent more than 400 bucks including my son's tooth filling. There's still more to go. We need to protect the other teeth to avoid paying much more in the future. I don't like my oldest son's teeth alignment at present and hopefully it will be corrected after all those milk teeth will gone. Anyway he's just 8 years old. I don't have idea yet what is this root canal treatment and how it will be done. I will make a research for it.

Homepage

More on health top ten ec dropper of the month

If you're using products from China, you should think to stop now because of this horrible news. A lot of babies already sick and four had already died. How come China did this to all their consumers. How come they put the life of the people in danger. Are they human? They been covering this issue for long time, now it's time for them to pay.

A CHINESE company whose tainted baby milk has made thousands of children ill failed to report complaints about the product for months, state media has reported.

Sanlu Group, the dairy company first found to be selling melamine-contaminated goods, began receiving complaints of sick children as early as last December, state television said yesterday, citing a cabinet investigation. But the problem was covered up until August.

Tainted milk products from Sanlu and other companies have left a total of 53,000 babies ill. Four have died.

The report came as Australian food safety authorities said Chinese lollies recalled overseas but available in Australia would not be pulled from shelves unless there was evidence they were contaminated.

Tests in Singapore revealed White Rabbit Creamy Candy contained traces of melamine. The company has since recalled the product. Australian food authorities are waiting for test results, expected by tomorrow.

Lydia Buchtmann from Food Standards Australia and New Zealand said no Chinese-made infant formula products were imported, and products with milk as a primary ingredient had not been imported in more than a year. Authorities were now trying to detect other Chinese products that may contain minor amounts of milk.

In Beijing, the state media report appeared to be the first official confirmation that news of the risks posed by the milk products was suppressed.

It said Communist Party officials in the north Chinese city of Shijiazhuang, where Sanlu is based, delayed referring the matter to higher authorities for more than a month after Sanlu finally told them of the problem on August 2 — just before the Beijing Olympics.

"In the eight months from December 2007 to August 2, 2008, Sanlu made no report to relevant authorities in Shijiazhuang and took no corrective measures, allowing the situation to worsen further," the report on state-run CCTV's news channel said. "(Sanlu and Shijiazhuang officials) violated rules on reporting major incidents involving food safety.

Reports of tainted milk emerged in state-run media only this month. The chemical melamine, normally used in making plastics, was apparently added to milk to give the appearance of higher protein levels.

Although it knew children were falling ill last December, Sanlu Group did not even begin testing its milk for dangerous substances until June, the cabinet probe reportedly found.

The Government has blamed tainted products for four deaths, and said that 12,892 children remained in hospital with kidney problems, 104 of them in a serious condition.

The repercussions outside mainland China continued to mount, with Hong Kong officials reporting a second child ill with a kidney stone after drinking Chinese dairy products.

The scandal claimed its biggest political scalp so far with the resignation of China's product-safety watchdog chief, Li Changjiang, on Monday.

AFP, with ANIELLA MILETIC
Click here and watch the video

Homepage

New kind of breast cancer

Read this forwarded email. True or not, I would like to let anyone know about this and not only the people on my mailing list.

In November, a rare kind of breast cancer was found. A lady developed a rash on her breast, similar to that of young mothers who are nursing.

Because her mammogram had been clear, the doctor treated her with antibiotics for infections. After 2 rounds, it continued to get worse, so her doctor sent her for another mammogram. This time it showed a mass.

A biopsy found a fast growing malignancy. Chemo was started in order to shrink the growth; then a mastectomy was performed; then a full round of Chemo; then radiation. After about 9 months of intense treatment, she was given a clean bill of health.
She had one year of living each day to itsfullest.

Then the cancer returned to the liver area. She took 4 treatments and decided that she wanted quality of life, not the after effects of Chemo. She had 5 great months and she planned each detail of the final days. After a few days of needing morphine, she died. She left this message to be delivered to women everywhere:

Women, PLEASE be alert to anything that is not normal, and be persistent in getting help as soon as possible.

Paget's Disease:

This is a rare form of breast cancer, and is on the outside of the breast, on the nipple and aureole

It appeared as a rash, which later became a lesion with a crusty outer edge. I would not have ever suspected it to be breast cancer but it was...

My nipple never seemed any different to me, but the rash bothered me, so I went to the doctor for that. Sometimes, it itched and was sore, but other than that it didn't bother me. It was just ugly and a nuisance, and could not be cleared up with all the creams prescribed by my doctor and dermatologist for the dermatitis on my eyes just prior to this outbreak. They seemed a little concerned but did not warn me it could be cancerous.

Now, I suspect not many women out there know a lesion or rash on the nipple or aureole can be breast cancer.

(Mine started out as a single red pimple on the aureole.

One of the biggest problems with Paget's disease of the nipple is that the symptoms appear to be harmless.

It is frequently thought to be a skin inflammation or

infection, leading to unfortunate delays in detection and care.)

What are the symptoms?

1. A persistent redness, oozing, and crusting of your nipple causing it to itch and burn (As I stated, mine did not itch or burn much, and had no oozing I was aware of, but it did have a crust along the outer edge on one side.)

2. A sore on your nipple that will not heal.

(Mine was on the aureole area with a whitish thick looking area in center of nipple).

3. Usually only one nipple is effected. How is it diagnosed?

Your doctor will do a physical exam and should suggest having a mammogram of both breasts, done immediately.

Even though the redness, oozing and crusting closely resemble dermatitis (inflammation of the skin),

your doctor should suspect cancer if the sore is only on one breast.

Your doctor should order a biopsy of your sore to confirm what is going on.

This message should be taken seriously and passed on to as many of your relatives and friends as possible; it could save someone's life.

My breast cancer has spread and metastasized to my bones after receiving mega doses of chemotherapy, 28 treatments of radiation and taking Tamaxofin. If this had been diagnosed as breast cancer in the beginning, perhaps it would not have spread...

TO ALL READERS:

This is sad as women are not aware of Paget's disease. If, by passing this around on the e-mail, we can make others aware of it and its potential danger, we are helping women everywhere.

Please, if you can, take a moment to forward this message to as many people as possible, especially to your family and friends. It only takes a moment, yet the results could save a life.

Homepage

Relaxing a Bundle of Joy

Pregnancy is one of the stressful state that a woman can be in, and it's also one of the most rewarding. When you think about online services, the common things that come to mind are auctions, banking, music and movies, and even groceries. There are only a few out there that offer online distribution of health related products such as medicines, and other pharmaceutical products.
It is common to hear about scams or fraudulent sites that offer an online store for medicines, and so a lot of us probably have this fear. We just tend to shy away from such services. But knowing the Internet, there are also very good online health sites that are legitimate and very much reliable. The Canada Pharmacy Escrow Service is one of these trusted sites that has been around for 4 years now. They offer a range of services that you can also get via the typical Pharmacy. They even have special offers for loyal customers. It's no wonder why they have been successful. Aside from the normal services of a Pharmacy, they also have discussions online relating to health topics.

Homepage

Endocrine system problem

The giant 11-month old baby.

This bundle of blubber may only be 11 months old, but he is already the size of an eight-year-old.

The giant baby tips the scales at a whopping 61lbs 12oz (28kg) and stands four and a half stone larger than his older brother. An Irish study published in the Archives of Ophthalmology found conclusively that high levels of both cholesterol and blood pressure increased the risk of suffering from eye disease.
"Similar to small blood vessels elsewhere in the body, vessels at the back of the eye are also susceptible to damage from high blood pressure," explains Dr Danny Cheung from the Retinal Vascular Imaging Centre at the Centre of Eye Research Australia.
"Chronic hypertension can lead to the development of several sigh-threatening eye conditions, including hypertensive retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and retinal arteriolar occlusion"
In extreme cases, disturbed blood flow causes the retina to become dysfunctional, causing complete loss of eyesight.
High cholesterol levels can be equally as damaging.
High cholesterol is a major ingredient for atherosclerosis, a common vascular disease process. In the eye, increased cholesterol promotes thrombus formation in the retinal veins, facilitating the development of retinal vein occlusion.
Dr Cheung believes that there is insufficient awareness of the connection between eyesight and high blood pressure and cholesterol by general practitioners.
"All GPs should perform fundoscopic examination for their patients who are at risk or retinal vein occlusion.
A fundoscopic examination looks at the eye through a special light. This can be determine if there is any increased pressure inside the skull, as well as detect the presence of any eye problems.
"This is important because early detection of certain retinal vascular abnormalities, such as focal narrowing of retinal venule at crossing sites with arteriole, can help vein occlusion. "In these patients, optimisation of blood pressure and cholesterol levels is imperative for the prevention of this blinding eye disease.

Homepage
