Iron for kids

Posted by Joy-O | children's health,healthy food for kids,nutrition | Thursday 15 May 2008 10:54 am

We parents strive hard to send our kids to a good school to help make him smart. our desire to raise intelligent kids, however, many of us overlook the fact that good education goes hand in hand with proper nutrition.
When it comes to food, children in the growing up stage 1 to 3 years do not fare very well. While feasting on their hotdog breakfast and persistently snubbing bittermelon (ampalaya) and liver, chances are, they may be missing out on an important nutrition.
Iron deficiency is the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in the world according to The World Health Organization. It affects 2 billion people over 30 percent of the world’s population.
But more than being a global health issue, the more urgent problem iron deficiency poses is its impact on a child’s development. When a child doesn’t get enough iron, it can lead to a condition known as Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA)
According to WHO, one of the most dramatic health effects of Iron Deficiency Anemia is its negative consequences on cognitive and physical development of children. There is a considerable evidence that iron is important for neurological functioning and development. What’s more, there is evidence that the effects of iron deficiency on our nervous systems are irreversible.

Good Iron Sources include:
liver and other meats
whole grains
shellfish
green leafy vegetables and nuts

Iron is one of the nutrients added to enriched cereals and breads. If you’re child eats little or none of these foods, make a special effort to include other sources of iron in his diet, like a good iron supplement.

Use antibiotics wisely

Posted by Joy-O | health alert | Wednesday 14 May 2008 10:01 am

Bad medication practices cause rising medicine resistance. If you really want to get well, don’t misuse antibiotics. It is warned recently that the habit of stopping medication before full recovery has given rise to antibiotic-resistant microbes, particularly those that cause pneumonia and influenza. Misuse of antibiotics occurs when patients take them when not really needed, fail to follow the closing schedule, or substitute prescribed medicine with a lower milligram or inferior formulation. Such practices, enable medicine resistance strains to develop, leading to low cure rates, longer illness, and sometimes even death.

Being overweight can be just as problematic as being underweight. The health consequences can be risky, if not fatal: A doctor says matter-of-factly that patients who are obese die younger. Moreover, exceeding your ideal weight can put at risk for the following:
Diabetes – It has been found that there’s a parallel increase of the diabetes threads in overweight people. In the United States, 60 percent of the population is gaining weight, and type 2 diabetes is increasing in prevalence as well.
Arthritis – Due to increasing weight, joint pains leading to arthritis couldn’t be far behind. Besides, even if you tell them to exercise, they cannot move anymore because their weight is so heavy.”
Sleep apnea – This is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing. “You’re so big, the lungs become affected. This makes you prone to sudden death because you can’t breathe that’s why you snore.
Infertility – Because weight affects processes such as ovulation, and even quality sperm production, infertility is a consequence for overweight males and females.
Social stigma - Although not a medical consequence, it’s one that’s equally important. “On TV now, super thin are all these billboards anywhere because they are promoting that thin is in especially in my country Philippines. I came from a vain country even if it’s a very poor country. Almost all girls are vain and they want thin. As when they see this on TV, it puts signals on their brains so fats really stigmatized.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer of women’s, next to breast cancer.
Cervical cancer however, is more dangerous, with only 2 or 3 surviving
from the disease for every 4 that survives breast cancer.
It is estimated that almost 70,000 Filipinas have cervical cancer with 7,000 acquiring the disease every year.
The leading cause of cervical cancer is the human papillomavirus or HPV which is also one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted infections in the world.
Women
who have had sex soon after they had their first menstruation, who had
several sexual partners, are smokers or are regularly exposed to
secondary smoke, have five children or more, and have weak immune
systems are susceptible to acquiring cervical cancer.
The most
dreadful fact about cervical cancer is that it doesn’t have any cure.
Prevention is your only protection against cervical cancer.
It is
highly preventable. According to the National Institute of Health
(USA), the correct and consistent use of condoms demonstrated a strong
protection against low and high-risk types of HPV infection among women.
