Transgender Man
Hi Mum…sorry, Dad
A transgender man in the US has stirred up an ethical storm by revealing that he is seven months pregnant.
Thomas Beatie, a silk green printing company owner from Bent, Oregon, says he is due to give birth to a girl in July.
Beatie, who was born a woman named Tracy Lagondino and now is legally man, wrote in gay mag The Advocate he started sex reassignment 10 years ago.
But rather than have the complete sex-change surgery, he only had breast surgery and testosterone treatment and retained his “reproductive rights” meaning he still has ovaries and a uterus.
“Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire, “he wrote.
With his wife, Nancy, unable to have kids after a hysterectomy 20 years ago, the couple decided two years ago that he would carry their baby and Beatie stopped taking his testosterone injections.
The couple claim they went through nine doctors in a year before buying a sperm from an anonymous donor and having a home insemination.
Doctors say the story is unusual, but possible.
“Biologically, that all sounds plausible,” said Mark Nicholas, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at Oregon Health and Science University.
Transgender men have given birth before, according to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre obstetrician Lisa Masterson.
But doubt has been cast on this story, with neighbours telling a local TV station they thought it was a hoax.
The Advocate has insisted Beatie’s doctor has confirmed the pregnancy.
