Cigarette, cancer DNA link

Posted by Joy-O | smooking effect | Saturday 31 May 2008 8:47 am

A protein responsible for repairing damaged DNA may be a vital link to explaining how smoking causes lung cancer.
Lung cells exposed to cigarette smoke produce less of a protein called FANCD2 based on a US researcher report.
Without FANCD2, damaged DNA can cause cells to proliferate out of control instead of destroying themselves as normal cells do.
The study in the British Journal of Cancer could lead to better treatment for lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death globally.
Lung cancer kills more than a million people every year and only 15 per cent of sufferers live for five years or longer.

Growing out of Asthma

Posted by Joy-O | asthma,children's health | Thursday 22 May 2008 11:50 pm

Many people think that children can grow out of asthma, however, this is not entirely correct.
Even though your child might not have asthma symptoms for hours, days or years, this does not mean they do not have asthma. Asthma may improve with age and attacks may become less frequent and/ or severe, but the tendency is always there.

Some children can experience long periods of time without symptoms, typically during the teenage years. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for children with asthma to not show symptoms for years and then have a recurrence of symptoms later in life. For every young children with asthma, improvement is generally due to increases in body size, overall improvement in health and fitness, muscle development etc, rather than a ‘cure’. However, asthma return at any time including later in life. Even though they might not display recent asthma symptoms, a person who has had asthma should always carry their blue reliever medication. Although there is currently no cure for asthma, it can be controlled and managed.

Smoking and Asthma

Posted by Joy-O | asthma,children's health,smooking effect | Wednesday 21 May 2008 3:01 am

Cigarette smoke is a trigger for many people with asthma, including children. Children have smaller and more delicate airways and are therefore more affected by tobacco smoke and the chemicals it contains. Unfortunately 2 in 5 children with asthma live with a smoker.
Children of smokers are more likely to have asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness. Asthma is more common among children of smokers.

Passive smoke
Children with asthma that are exposed to secondhand smoke have a greater risk of developing symptoms at a younger age. They tend to have more asthma attacks and are more likely to use asthma medications more often and for a longer period. It is estimated that children of parents who smoke are exposed to the same amount of nicotine as if they were actively smoking 60 to 150 cigarettes a year.

Smoking in the family car
Travelling in a smoke filled car can be harmful to the overall health of your children, and can trigger an attack in children who have asthma. Therefore a school should strongly encourage parents to don’t smoke in the car when they have their children.

Easy ways to balance meals

Posted by Joy-O | nutrition | Wednesday 21 May 2008 1:30 am

. Reduce your portion of breakfast cereal by adding sliced banana, strawberries or kiwi fruit.
. Have vegetable soups or salads for lunch with small amounts of protein.
. Add a piece of fruit before or after a meal.
. Eat meat, poultry or fish with a mixed salad, instead of potatoes (one of the few acid-forming vegetables), rice pr pasta.
. If planning rice and pasta meals, add another vegetable to the dish.
. Sip high-alkaline fruit juices (try watermelon) or combined vegetable juices (such as V8) at least once a day.
. Drink your eight glasses of water a day with a squeeze of lemon.
. Eat fruit snacks every meals.
. Drink herbal teas instead of coffee and black teas.
. Take a calcium citrate supplement daily.
By doing all this, you’ll not only balance your body’s pH, but also take in more nutrients and enzymes that will boost your looks and vitality.

Measuring Cholesterol

Posted by Joy-O | Cholesterol,health alert | Sunday 18 May 2008 6:05 am

Regular blood cholesterol testing is recommended for all adults aged 45 years and over, and also for younger adults with a family history of heart disease, who have high blood pressure or who smoke.
Follow-up testing frequency will vary depending on your age, level of risk and your doctor’s advice. People over 45 at lower risk may not require another blood test for five years whereas those at higher risk may require annual testing. Testing may be required more often, for example, in the first few months after commencing treatment with cholesterol-lowering medications.
The blood test measures.
. Your total blood cholesterol
. Your HDL (good) cholesterol
. Your LDL (bad) cholesterol
. Your triglyceride levels
Cholesterol levels are measured in units called millimoles per litre of blood (mmol/L). Depending on what is being measured, your doctor will advise you if you need to fast before your blood test.
Generally, the lower your blood cholesterol levels the better. This is especially true for people with other risk factors or with coronary heart disease. For example, a total of blood cholesterol level of 4.5 mmol/L is better than 5.5 mmol/L and a blood triglyceride level of 1.5 mmol/L is better than 2.0 mmol/L for women. Level of 6.5mmol/L for men and 5.4mmol/L for women. Levels of 6.5mmol/L or more indicate high risk.

Hugs for Health

When it comes to good health, a little cuddle goes a long way. Cuddling can reduce heart disease, cut down stress, and promote longevity, according to a study published last August 2005 Journal for Psychosomatic Medicine Researchers from the University of North Carolina found that cuddling stimulates the production of oxytocin, a hormone that stimulates lactation and promotes a mom’s nurturing feeling toward her child.
Couples who took part in the experiment were first put into separate rooms, where their blood pressure and levels of oxytocin and cortisol (stress hormone) were tested.
Next, they were transferred to a quiet area and asked to sit close together on a loveseat, holding hands. They watched a 5-minute romantic video, followed by a 2-minute talk about a time they felt close as a couple. At the end of the session, partners stood for a half-minuted hug. After only 10 minutes of warm, supportive touching, researchers found a market increase in the couples’ blood supply. The researchers findings suggest that when the relationship is supportive and strong, time spent with the partner may be beneficial by reducing blood pressure and protecting against future heart disease.
