Think BeforeYou Eat

Posted by Joy-O | nutrition | Sunday 27 April 2008 6:57 am

If you’re catching up with a friend this weekend, chances are there will be involved somewhere.
Eating out is the most popular way to keep in touch with friends, which is funny when you consider how many ways you can be rude when eating.
When tucking into your dinner beware of big no-nos like getting caught talking with your might full, accidental splashes of sauce or crumbs around your mouth, or God forbid food in your teeth.
Even if you’ve managed to get through a meat without doing any of the above you still have to worry about stinking of a garlic or onion.
The truth is stuffing our faces seems to complement just about any social occasion.
And don’t think this situation has come about by chance.
Manufacturers know the most people have little or no willpower when faced with a delicious treat.
What’s more worrying is the growing number of people who can’t control their munchies and go one step further.’I'm talking about the weird world of competitive eating.
There are plenty of idiots out there who take the competitions seriously and :train” for weeks on end.
They’ve even set up an international federation.
Looking at the federation’s homepage, I have to admit I was shocked.
You assume the people competing would absolutely adore the food they are gobbling down.
But the records show people are downing bowls of mayonnaise, raw onion, beef jerky, pigs’ feet and knuckles, (an American Thanksgiving invention – chicken stuffed into a duck, then stuffed into turkey , then cooked).
A quick Google search brings up wistful tales from gluttonous food lovers of all-you-can-eat ice cream, hot dog, spaghetti and oyster feasts happening all over Australia.
Yes, that’s right, it’s not just the Yanks who reward gluttony with a cash bonus.
Even the Federal Government – you know, the one “committed to healthy eating and reducing obesity” – has pie-eating competitions on its official list of suggested Australia Day activities.
What a message to be sending out.
If you want to be an Aussie you must binge-eat kilo joule-ridden pies.
Even more ludicrous is the food federation’s mantra – that eating is a “skill” people can work on.
Someone should tell these people eating is not a skill.
You are not skilled if you enjoy eating straight mayonnaise – you need help.
And eating in such excess is bloody dangerous, too.
Last year in the US a woman died from drinking too much water in a radio station competition.
And only last March a man in Britain died after taking a part in a cake-eating competition.
While your first reaction might be a stifled giggle at the though of someone dying from an attack of the fairy cakes, when people die it becomes clear these competitions are past their use-by date.

Fetal Booster

Omega 3 is a smart move for expectant mothers if they eat enough of it late in pregancy because it can give their babies a brain boost.
Researchers found that among 109 Inuit infants, those whose umbilical-cord blood was higher in docosahexaenoic acid, an omega 3 acid, at birt did better in brain and eye tests at six and 11 months.
The findings that reported in the Journal of Pediatrics, highlight the importance of DHA in the mother’s diet during the third trimester of pregnancy, when brain development accelerates.

New Hopes on Cirrhosis

Posted by Joy-O | Liver disease | Monday 21 April 2008 3:49 am

Scientists in Japan have designed artificial molecules that, when used with rats, successfully reversed liver cirrhosis, a serious chronic disease in humans that until now can only be cured by transplants.
Cirrhosis is the hardening or scarring of the liver and is caused by factors such as heavy drinking and hepatitis B and C.
The disease is especially serious in parts of Asia, including China.
Cirrhosis happens when a class of liver cells starts producing collagen, a fibrous material that toughens skin and tendons.
Such damage cannot be taken to prevent further damage.

I lose weight

Posted by Joy-O | health journal,personal | Thursday 17 April 2008 11:39 am

Yeah I lose weight but I am not happy of course. I am striving hard to gain weight because I’m petite and slim. The more I strive hard, the more I came back to zero. I already gained weight but because of the antibiotic I was taken I lose what I gained. Mostly people are striving hard too just to lose weight, get rid of those fats, belt bags especially after giving birth. But me, it’s my opposite problem. I have three kids but hey look at me. Skinny as a teeny? Oh well, sometimes it’s overwhelming to hear such nice approach about my body type but please if I’m this skinny and I will lose weight I will become a bone and I feel it now. My face cheekbones which I hate so much really appearing. My wrist watch that was used to fit my wrist now it is loosen. My favourite brassiere I used to wear is sometimes falling down and can’t hold in its place. My tummy starting to get little chubby now more flat. My rings loosen. My face looks like a balloon losing its air slowly.
Vitamins can’t help me. Eating a lot can’t too. Some of my friends said I’m sexy and I’m lucky with my body. Doh! All I can say is what..e..ver!

My Face after taking antibiotics- bony with pimples

My face before taking antibiotics! chubby and clean

I’m not ill

Posted by Joy-O | health journal,personal | Wednesday 9 April 2008 7:53 am

What a weird thing but it’s a good news. I’m okay, I’m not ill. All the results of my laboratory tests are negative. I have no problem with my kidney nor didn’t even mention about UTI getting worst.
The question is. What’s wrong with me? What are those frustrating feelings before? Am I that super stressed to feel such burning sensation that won’t make me sleep well? Am I still adjusting with the new country, the new climate and all? What do you call this one? A culture shock? Irrelevant! Climate shock maybe. Even my skin is not in good condition. I used to have flawless face and back in the Philippines but since I arrived here, I got lots of rashes on my back, pimples on my forehead now starting to spread on my cheek. I’m so worried but what can I do with this? I wash my face regularly and I take a bath every day. I take vitamins! I make sure I got enough sleep excluding those times that I can’t sleep because of frequent dysuria. But hey! Besides that, vanity is in me. I took care of myself well. I want this concerned to be solve. I need answers to my questions. Who can?
Oh well, I am still very thankful because of the negative results with all the examinations done. So far, I am feeling well because of the Triptrim tablet I’m taking for 7 days. I don’t know what’s that antibiotic for but it was recommended by my doctor and it has a really good effect with my feeling. The doctor just told me to come back to her when frequent dysuria and burning sensation will attack again. Hopefully not! I am now practicing to drinks lots and lots of water that come to a point that I want to vomit because my tummy is full of water. All I can hear is water but I did not become intoxicated with water anyway.

Artificial sperm may make men redundant

Posted by Joy-O | Health and Science | Monday 7 April 2008 9:37 am

Artificial human sperm could come to the aid of infertile men, according to a team of German scientists who have used lab-grown sperm to inseminate mice.

Artificial sperm could also make males totally redundant, permitting women to give birth without a biological male mate.

The genetic scientists at the University of Goettingen in Germany have produced 65 mouse foetuses using sperm which was grown from embryonic stem cells, according to a Deutschlandfunk radio report.

Twelve baby mice have been born using this artificial, lab-grown sperm, said Dr Wolfgang Engel, director of Human Genetics at the medical university.

However, the mortality rate is high, he told the German broadcaster.

“We started out with 65 embryos from egg cells which had been inseminated by the sperm-like cells created in our lab. Of those, 12 reached full term and were born. But seven of the newborn animals died within a period ranging from three days to five months after birth of causes which we have not been able to determine,” he said.

“So you can see that this is all still in the very early experimental stages,” he added. “If it works in the mouse, I’m sure it will also work in the human.”

A sperm cell from an embryonic stem cell would still not give an infertile man a biological tie to his child, however. It would not be any different than using donor sperm.

Dr Engel’s team has now turned to generating sperm from very early germ cells taken from the testicles. Another possibility is to try and generate viable sperm cells using stem cells in bone marrow.

Dr Engel says if sperm can be grown in the lab, it would be possible to take early germ cells from one woman, turn them into sperm cells, and use those to fertilise the egg of another woman.

But Dr Engel said his team will stop short of tests on humans in compliance with federal law in Germany which bans all genetic research using human stem cells.

He said one member of his team has gone to Newcastle, England, to conduct research on artificial human sperm.

DNA test kit in shops

Posted by Joy-O | Health and Science | Saturday 5 April 2008 1:14 pm

An American company has begun selling over-the-counter DNA paternity tests.
A swab, a consent form, an envelope and a waiting period of three to five business days is all there is to settling paternity issues with the test kit, which went on sale today at some US pharmacies.
Identigene, which runs a DNA testing laboratory, said its DNA Paternity Test Collection Kit went on sale 4363 Rite Aid pharmacies throughout the United States, except New York.
The swab in the $32 kit is used to collect s saliva sample, to be mailed to the Identigene laboratory for an analysis that costs an additional $129.
It takes three to five business days to get the test results, which are delivered by mail, email, or online through a secured web service.
The paternity test kit is already a hit in California, Washington and Oregon states, where they have been selling on a trial basis since November.
According to the statement “Demand has been very strong, store sales are brisk and Identigene has been inundated with questions regarding the product’s availability,”
Test kit buyers include women who want to know the identity of the father of their child – or unborn child – as well as people looking for their parents.
Sold with prescription, the paternity kits are not allowed as evidence in court, where more precise and costly DNA tests are required.

Consultation

Posted by Joy-O | health journal,personal | Wednesday 2 April 2008 10:09 pm

Finally I was able to consult a doctor the other day and yesterday the laboratory test was done. I will be expecting the result tomorrow and my x-ray is also scheduled 11 am o’clock in the morning. We found a General Practitioner just near our street and she is trusted by many. She is an Indian and she looks strict but she’s nice anyway. Dr Sulo Mahendran.
I consulted to her about my problem with the UTI and guess what I was freaking with all the questions. She talks a lot about sex. She was asking if I felt burning after performing it. I never take it seriously before that sex has really something to do with UTI and yeah I remember it with the research I’ve done. But I know for sure it’s not the reason why this UTI attacking me now. Called it weird but the time we arrived here in Oz and I experienced so much cold, freezing with the weather gosh that’s keeps me coming back to the toilet and pee little by little (frequent dysuria in medical terms). It’s normal for pregnant buy hey I am not! This illness wakes me up 2 0′clock in the morning until 5 and it’s really frustrating because I want to sleep but how? The pain or the burning sensation is freaking me, bothers me a lot. I need to keep myself busy like spending my time here in my computer by that time just to forget the uneasy feeling while my family is soundly sleeping.
Another question Dr Mahendran asked was about feeling the burning sensation before and after menstruation. I do and the feeling is much worse. I will just cry alone especially when I can’t sleep. Burning sensation (balisawsaw) in Filipino term is my best enemy. So the Doctor recommended me to have the lab test. She referred us to a specific clinic laboratory for the entire test.
I was thankful my hubby was still able to spend his time with me even busy at work. He’s just scared to lose me early lol!
Tomorrow he’ll be with me again for my kidney x-ray. I will empty my bladder by 9 am and then drink 4glasses of water between 9-10 am. Full bladder before x-ray has to be done. No fasting required.
I just hope nothing is really bad or serious problem about with my gall bladder or kidney as I am afraid to leave my family early and kids are still young. I’ll be okay, God is with me.
